Though I have been running competitively for over 10 years, and in that time have collected a fair number of accolades, as a runner I have never thought of myself as simply an athlete. For me running has always been an activity of dialogue—dialogue between teammates, between coach and athlete, between athletes and their own bodies—all of which is directed toward slow, and I argue inevitable, improvement. It is this aspect of distance running that has always captivated me, and for this reason coaching has always been so natural for me. My passion is in understanding exactly what makes a runner feel like a runner—what makes one feel quick, the other feel tireless. Most important, though, is that which makes the runner feel like they never have before, where with every step they feel themselves on the edge of a breakthrough! When a runner feels like that, the race is the easiest part.
