  1. I recently purchased the new NB 880 v7s. I wanted to get a few runs in before I gave you the breakdown. I now have three runs in these and have a pretty good concept of what these are.

    Key word: Ahhhhhh

Maybe I’m getting old, but there is something cozy about comfort. There was a time when it was okay to sacrifice comfort for racy, but I think I’m over that. I was really surprised when I put these on to find how CUSHY they were. I had narrowed the 10 or so neutral shoes down to this one and a set of mizunos, and from a heel cushion perspective, they were almost identical. Where this one sold me was in the amount of forefoot cushioning that you typically don’t find in a higher offset shoe (10mm).

With a recent history of some lower leg issues: Achilles/calf/stress fracture, I’m super sensitive about what any sort of perceived pressure there. So a deep heel cup or a high collar are immediately concerning to me, and this one is perfect in both regards.

It has a full rubber bottom which make me lean towards the likelihood this will be a higher mileage shoe. I have not had any associated lateral stiffness. The heel, midfoot and toe are separate sections, so I haven’t felt any weird transition through my footstrike.

Upper is nothing special, similar to the majority of its running lineup lately, fresh foam etc where it’s all just laminate type sock structure (opposed to external leather stitched overlay or molded plastic like through logo). So for that reason I’d give this the thumbs down for any serious off-road or off-camber training.

Anyway. I know I said this review would be quick. So let’s wrap this up. I give this shoe an 8.5 out of 10. It’s a tad on the heavyish side, but I think you gain durability. That being said it’s only slightly heavier (~.5 oz) than its cushioning competitors like the Adidas Boosts and Brooks Ghost 9s. This is going to be a fantastic road trainer, and one you will appreciate on longer training runs. I have run fastish 5, slow 6, and easy 3 and love how it feels, especially on downhills. Other than that, it disappears on the runs, which is a good thing.

Feel wise, it’s every bit as cushy as my boosts and Altras… which is saying a lot. I love those shoes. Lots of forefoot space. Relatively spacious heel, so if you have a narrow heel or have a tendency for slip, I’d consider a lock lace pattern.
